Keeping your New Year’s Resolutions- Tips from Soreen!

Posted on: 13th January 2015

New Year’s Resolutions. We all make them. We all break them. You know the drill. Basically you promise yourself to change something in your life over the coming year. It could be as simple as ‘I’m going to eat less chocolate’ or it could be as ambitious as ‘I’m going to visit the gym every day’. The problem though isn’t usually in making the resolution, but keeping it!

So, once again it’s ‘Soreen to the rescue’ with a few tips and ideas on how to keep that resolution going…. for at least a little longer than last year.

Don’t say NEVER say LESS

Be realistic with your resolution. For instance, if you want to cut down on how much wine you drink, don’t make the decision to ‘never touch a glass ever again’, it’s being unfair on yourself and could make life a bit dull too, so instead, decide to drink a little less and aim for that.

Avoid split-second resolutions

Don’t make an instant resolution at one minute past midnight on New Year’s Eve. Your brain could well be making promises your body can’t keep. Think about it in advance, so you’re sure of what you’re promising and more confident of keeping it.

Give yourself a break

If you slip up and ‘forget’ your resolution on the odd occasion, don’t beat yourself up over it. Simply get back on track again as soon as poss and take one day at a time.

Try and keep it for at least 3 weeks

The experts reckon it takes approximately 21 days for any new activity in your life to start becoming a habit and around six months for it to become a permanent fixture, so stick with your resolution, and be patient.

Share the responsibility

Of course it’s your resolution and no one else’s, but if you tell your friends and family about it, they can support you and talk you down from difficult moments, like eating that extra piece of cake. Best of all, if you can find a friend who’s made the same resolution as you, you can motivate each other. Happy days.

Pat yourself on the back

If you’re weeks into your resolution and everything is going well, give yourself a reward. Buy some new shoes, or go to the movies, whatever turns you on.

Don’t forget to turn to Soreen
